Create Stunning Arrangements in a Few Easy Steps

Create Stunning Arrangements in a Few Easy Steps

Flowers brighten any space, elevate our moods, and make us happy. But how do you create an arrangement that looks stunning? Here are some tips to ensure designer level creations.

To begin your arrangement, always remember to cut flower stems diagonally with sharp shears or a knife. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents stems from resting flat on the vase's bottom, which can block water flow. Decide whether your arrangement will be front facing or an all-around arrangement. Front facing will be beautiful on the front and the rear will be stems, mostly of the greenery or filler.

Design with Balance. The height of the arrangement is determined by the size of the vase. A good rule of thumb is the flowers should rise out of the vase about the height of the vase. This means the total height of the arrangement, vase and flowers, is two times the vase height. When you choose your flowers consider the height of the vase you plan to use. Consider the scale and proportion of your arrangement. Focal flowers (lilies and roses) can form the center and top while shorter blooms and greenery can fill out the arrangement and add texture. Taller flowers (gladioli or snapdragons) may stick out a bit from the complete arrangement providing additional dimension. Experiment with different heights and shapes to create a visually interesting composition.

Start your arrangement by placing greens or “filler” first (limonium, solidago, eucalyptus). This provides a frame for the beautiful blooms that you will place in the natural spaces that will be created. This is very beneficial for all-around arrangements. To avoid mold, trim off any blooms or leaves that fall below the water line in the vase. The next step is to place the larger and more vibrant focal flowers and follow them with the smaller “support” flowers to fill any empty spaces. Additional greenery or filler can fill any remaining gaps in the arrangement.

Now that you have created a beautiful floral arrangement, place the vase in a location where you can admire it! Be sure and keep it away from vents blowing directly on the arrangement. Snap a photo and send it to us, we might feature your arrangement in our blog!
