Three Blooms We Can't Get Enough Of
Summer is the season when Mother Nature pulls out all the stops — and so do we. Whether you're putting together a jaw-dropping centerpiece, a garden-fresh gift, or just want to treat yourself to something beautiful, these three summer favorites deserve a spot in your vase. Let us introduce you to the iris, the scabiosa, and the veronica.
Iris: The Queen of the Summer Garden
The iris is one of those flowers that makes you stop in your tracks. It starts its journey as a tightly closed, spear-like bud — and then, like a slow-motion fireworks show, it opens into one of the most dramatic blooms in the flower world. The outer petals sweep downward in an elegant curve while the center stands tall and proud, creating a two-toned display that's nothing short of regal. The classic iris is deep purple with a golden-yellow center, but they also come in all-yellow and crisp, clean white.
Beyond their beauty, irises carry some of our favorite symbolism: faith, hope, wisdom, and positive change. When words aren't enough, let an iris say it for you.
Scabiosa: The Flower with the Unfortunate Name (But the Most Charming Personality)
We'll be the first to admit it — scabiosa is not exactly a pretty name for such a pretty flower. The name comes from its old-world use as a treatment for skin irritations, including scabies. Not exactly the romantic origin story you'd hope for! But don't let that put you off, because the flower itself is delightful.
Scabiosa has a rounded, mounded center absolutely packed with tiny stamens — so much so that it earned a much more charming nickname: the pincushion flower. Wispy, delicate petals radiate outward from that center mound like a tiny firework frozen in time. The bloom sits atop a tall, slender stem, giving arrangements an airy, wildflower feel.
And here's a fun bonus: scabiosa petals are completely edible. Scatter them over a summer salad or press one onto a dessert for a garnish that's as stunning as it is unexpected.
Veronica: The Tall, Wispy Wonder
If your arrangement needs a little height, drama, or just something that makes people say "ooh, what is that?" — Veronica is your flower. These tall, spire-like blooms are covered from roughly 4 inches to tip in tiny flowers in shades of blue, white, purple, or pink, giving them an almost magical, feathery appearance. They add whimsy and vertical dimension to any arrangement in a way that rounder blooms simply can't.
Veronica represents fidelity and loyalty, making it a wonderful addition to anniversary bouquets or any arrangement meant to say "I'm here for you."
Here's our favorite Veronica fun fact: bees are absolutely wild about these flowers, and they pollinate from the bottom of the spire upward. That's why you'll often notice that the lower portion of a Veronica bloom is more open — the bees have already been there and done their work. Nature's little signature.
These three beauties are in the shop all summer long, and we love working with each one. Come in and see them in person — because trust us, photos don't do them justice.
We'll see you soon! 🌸
