Unique and Fun Flower Facts

Hey there, flower fans! Get ready for some quirky flower facts that'll make you the life of the party (or at least the most interesting person at the dinner table). So you know that unique quirk Uncle Joe has with his bar-b-que tongs? HAHA just kidding but everyone has unique quirks. Flowers have 'em too! And we're about to spill all the juicy details. There are some quirks to help them last longer and some to help them bloom more expansively and some to help you....so please, read on.

The tall statuesque Gladiolus—hmm is it Glads, Gladiola, Gladiolus or Gladioli. The correct spelling of the singular is Gladiolus; the plural is Gladioli; and they are pronounced Gladiola. Whew, don’t worry, an easy Glads will get you what you are looking for here at La Fleur. Now that we've got that down, here's a pro tip: snap off the tip to encourage opening of the blooms further up the stem.

Our favorite, Lilies, those gorgeous blooms have a dirty little secret. All Lilies have those pesky stamens that produce that orange/yellow pollen that stains your fingers, your linens, anything it comes in contact with. Pull those stamens off as soon as your Lilies begin to open. Before they pollenate they are completely dry and not opened yet to emit the staining powder. Pulling those off will also extend the life of the Lily. Win-Win!

Now about those bold, full Hydrangea. These ladies love water – and we mean REALLY love water. They are the only flower that drinks through its petals. So be sure and spritz the head of your hydrangea every few days. If you see them bent over, droopy and dehydrated the next day try putting them head first into water for about 10 minutes. Oftentimes this revives them. It’s like a flower facial!

Everyone’s favorite the Tulip, they continue to grow! That's right, folks, these cuties keep on giving. After being cut, Tulips can grow up to an additional 3”. The flower head will get larger and the stem will lengthen. Shocking! Who knew your bouquet could be a bouquet and a half?

Last but not least, a bonus fact. Sunflowers are actually comprised of 1,000–2,000 smaller flowers, with each petal on the head called a ray floret. Mind. Blown.

So there you have it, folks! Flowers are full of quirks and secrets. But with these tips and tricks, you'll be well on your way to becoming a flower whisperer. Happy blooming!
